Studying in Australia on a student visa: THE Q&A
1 – STUDYING IN AUSTRALIA: WHICH STUDIES TO CHOOSE TO APPLY FOR THE STUDENT VISA?
You can do studies in all types of fields and at all levels. However, you have to choose a course recognised by the Immigration Department to be eligible for the Student Visa.
There are three types of studies in Australia recognised by the Immigration Department to be eligible for the Student Visa:
- Universities: Bachelor, Master, Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Doctorate (PhD).
- Short Term Studies (Or Vocational Training): These are short term studies which correspond to the CAP-BEP level for Certificates and to the BTS level for Advanced Diploma. You will be able to choose programs such as Sport, Business, Massage, Graphic Design, Management or even Leadership.
- English Courses (ELICOS): These are refresher courses that will allow you to quickly improve your English level or to prepare for international exams such as IELTS, TOEIC or TOEFL.
2 – WHAT FIELD IS IT POSSIBLE TO STUDY IN AUSTRALIA?

3 – CAN I DO A MASTER IN AUSTRALIA? WHAT ARE THE PREREQUISITES?
The Australian system is different from the French one. Indeed, there are two types of Masters:
- Master “by Coursework” which corresponds to the French Master i.e. BAC + 5. For example, Master in Business, Management, IT or Engineering.
- Master “by Research and Thesis” which is for students who later on want to do a Doctorate (PhD).
4 – WHAT ARE THE BEST UNIVERSITIES IN AUSTRALIA AND HOW TO CHOOSE?
Firstly, you should know that a large number of Australian Universities are recognised worldwide.
Indeed, in each Australian state, there is at least one University ranked in the world’s top Universities!

5 – IS THERE A MINIMUM LEVEL OF ENGLISH REQUIRED TO STUDY IN AUSTRALIA?
Yes, Universities and schools require you to have a certain score at the IELTS or the PTE. It depends on the course that you have chosen though.
Good to know: For English courses, there is no minimum level required.
6 – IS THE TOEIC ACCEPTED AS ENGLISH TEST?
No, Australian schools don’t accept the TOEIC as proof of level of English. Only the IELTS and the PTE are accepted.
Some schools also offer free English tests in their establishments to prove your level of English.
7 – I AM OFFSHORE, HOW DO I DO MY ENGLISH TEST?
Some schools and Universities offer online tests for those offshore. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you need help to organise your online test.
8 – WHAT CAN I DO IF MY LEVEL OF ENGLISH IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH?
Too easy! You can enrol for General English intensive courses (20 hours per week) which will help you improve your overall level of English including grammar and speaking.
You can also attend specific courses that helps you get ready for the exam that you need such as IELTS, Cambridge or PTE.
9 – MY CERTIFICATE IS IN ENGLISH, DO I NEED TO TRANSLATE IT?
Yes. To enrol for an Australia University, your documents must be NAATI certified translated.
For other courses (Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma), you also have to translate them and StudyBird can manage this for you.
10 – I DON’T HAVE ANY CERTIFICATE, CAN I STILL DO A STUDENT VISA?
Yes of course, you can study in Australia even if you don’t have any certificate in France. You have access to short term courses such as Certificate. There are also many equivalence available in Australia that will help you reach a Licence or Master level.
11 – WHEN DOES THE SCHOOL YEAR START IN AUSTRALIA?

13 – CAN I STUDY TWO DIFFERENT DEGREES AT THE TIME WITH THE SAME STUDENT VISA?
You will not be able to study two degrees at the same time. You would have to do one after the other. This will allow you to get a longer Student Visa and stay longer in Australia though!
